AGE IX - THE LONG DORMANCY
The Imperium endures. But it does not thrive.
Growth slows.
Districts age.
Roads see fewer travelers.
Monuments weather.
Maintenance replaces expansion.
Preservation replaces ambition.
The city does not collapse.
It survives.
This is the age responsible for the appearance of modern Aternum.
The city is not ruined.
The city is weathered.
The Imperium is not defeated.
The Imperium is enduring.

Historical Record
The Fall of Romulus left a wound that could not be easily repaired. The Imperium had survived.
Its institutions remained intact.
Its capital still stood.
Its archives remained protected.
Yet survival alone could not restore what had been lost.
The confidence that had defined previous generations faded.
Expansion slowed.
The great ambitions that once carried Legions beyond the horizon became increasingly rare.
Attention turned inward.
Resources that had once fueled growth were redirected toward preservation.
The roads remained open.
But fewer travelers walked them.
The districts of Aternum remained populated.
But new construction became uncommon.
The monuments erected during the Golden Age still stood proudly above the city.
Yet years of wind, rain, and time gradually left their mark upon stone that had once seemed eternal.
For many generations, the Imperium existed in this state.
Neither rising nor falling.
Neither flourishing nor failing.
Simply enduring.
This period became known as the Long Dormancy.
A time when Blacksky preserved what remained rather than pursuing what might come next.
The Hall of Dread continued to safeguard the earliest foundations of the Imperium.
The Archives continued to record its history.
The Blackguard continued their watch beneath the city.
The institutions endured even when momentum did not.
To outside observers, Aternum appeared changed.
Its walls were weathered.
Its roads were quieter.
Its monuments bore the marks of age.
But appearances often concealed a deeper truth.
The city had not been abandoned.
The city had not surrendered.
It had survived.
And survival, though less glorious than conquest, proved no less important.

Legacy
The Long Dormancy preserved the Imperium through its most uncertain era.It prevented the loss of the foundations established by the ages that came before.
The city endured.
The Hall of Dread endured.
The Archives endured.
The Blackguard endured.
Aternum endured.
Future generations would inherit a weathered Imperium rather than a broken one.
That distinction would prove to be the difference between extinction and renewal.
The Golden Age built the Imperium.
The Long Dormancy preserved it.
And because it endured, a resurgence remained possible.
