Founder of BlackskyI have been involved in gaming clans and communities for nearly two decades, beginning during the Xbox 360 era. Halo 3 was my introduction to online gaming, and from there came competitive gaming, clans, communities, leadership, and eventually Blacksky.
Over the years, I have participated in dozens of communities and founded or led more than fifty clans, teams, projects, and organizations. Some lasted years. Others lasted months. A few probably should have lasted considerably less.
Through all of it, I developed a passion for building things. Organizations, rank structures, leadership systems, websites, graphics, documents, doctrine, and the countless small details that transform an idea into something tangible have always interested me as much as the games themselves.
Gaming remains a major interest of mine, particularly franchises such as Halo, Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Mass Effect. Outside of gaming and Blacksky, my interests include premium cigars, bourbon, cars, design, history, the outdoors, and Western wear. If I'm not wearing cowboy boots, something has probably gone terribly wrong.
What Blacksky Means to Me
Blacksky started as another gaming project. It did not remain one.
There have been periods when Blacksky disappeared. There have been attempts to replace it, rebuild somewhere else, create something new, or simply move on. Different names were tried. Different organizations were built. Some of them were good. Some could have succeeded.
None of them felt like Blacksky.
That realization has followed us through every iteration of this organization. No matter how much changed, the name kept calling us back.
Today, Blacksky represents nearly two decades of experience condensed into a single project. Every failed clan, abandoned idea, leadership mistake, successful community, friendship, rivalry, redesign, collapse, and reconstruction contributed something to what Blacksky has become.
The Resurgence is the first time I have been able to look at Blacksky not simply as another gaming community, but as something built to endure. Its structure, history, identity, doctrine, and traditions exist because we finally stopped trying to build the next thing and started building our thing.
Blacksky has changed a thousand times.
It has fallen apart. It has gone dormant. It has been rebuilt. We have walked away from it and inevitably found our way back.
But we never stopped caring about it.
After all these years, I no longer wonder what comes after Blacksky.
There is no next name.
Blacksky is the name.
